Community Cornerstone

from Supt. Dr. Tracy Smith

December 4, 2025

Dear NUSD Families and Community,

Happy Holidays to our NUSD community! We wish you and your families a joyful season filled with warmth, celebration, and meaningful time together. To our high school students—good luck with upcoming finals, you've worked hard and we’re cheering you on as you finish strong. November and December across our schools have been filled with inspiring performances, showcasing the remarkable music, dance, and acting talents of our students. Congratulations to our students for sharing their creativity and dedication on stage—your gifts bring so much pride to our community and fill our campuses with joy.

Next week we look forward to recognizing Inclusive Schools Week, an observance that highlights the importance of belonging, kindness, and empowerment for all students. We are grateful to partner with families in nurturing welcoming and inclusive schools where every child can thrive.

On Saturday evening, the community will come together for the annual tree lighting in downtown Novato, hosted by the City of Novato and the Downtown Novato Business Association. We hope to see you there enjoying the festivities. Thank you for your ongoing support and for being such an essential part of our district community.

Kindly,

Dr. Tracy Smith

Starting last summer, riders under 16 will no longer be allowed to use throttle-powered Class 2 e-bikes.

Here’s a quick refresher:
  • Class 1 e-bikes only assist when you pedal and stop helping at 20 mph. Legal for all ages.
  • Class 2 e-bikes assist with a throttle up to 20mph, and pedaling isn't required. You must be 16+ to ride in Marin.
  • Class 3 e-bikes only assist when you pedal, and stop helping at 28 mph. You must be 16+ to ride anywhere.
  • All legal e-bikes have working pedals and a motor up to 750 watts.

To help families and youth stay in the know about e-bike safety, E-Bikers Club is here! Find safety tips, law updates, and resources for students, parents, and schools at E-BikersClub.com and Novato Police has a webpage with information novato.org/ebikes .
