Weekly Newsletter
Edition #22 (2/8)
Principal’s Note:
I am writing to share an opportunity to support one of our academic programs at San Marin: Mock Trial. As we look ahead to next season, our team needs additional adult support so we can keep building on our recent momentum.
Over the past three years, Mock Trial has grown significantly and become increasingly competitive across Marin County. This year, four of our seniors earned blue ribbons as top performers in their categories. We are also proud that graduates have gone on to pursue pre law majors, and at least one has continued Mock Trial at the collegiate level.
Our students’ commitment goes well beyond the season; several team members have attended, or plan to attend, summer law academies at universities such as Stanford and Georgetown. Mock Trial students have also represented San Marin at the American Legion Boys and Girls State program in Sacramento, earning awards for their participation, including recognition for being among the top student legal advocates in the state.
What is Mock Trial?
Mock Trial is a county and state academic competition where students spend five months analyzing a hypothetical criminal case and presenting a full trial. Students take on roles including pre-trial attorneys, prosecutors, defense attorneys, witnesses, a bailiff, and a court clerk. Teams prepare both sides of the case and must be ready to present either side on competition day.
Competitions take place in real courtrooms. Students are adjudicated by Marin County Superior Court judges and scored by licensed attorneys. The winner of the county competition advances to state, and then to nationals.
Mock Trial develops skills that matter in every field: critical thinking, public speaking, analytical reasoning, and teamwork. It is also widely recognized as a meaningful academic extracurricular on college applications.
Season overview:
The season runs from mid-September through January. Practices typically meet two evenings per week in the fall, and in January, teams shift to scrimmages with other schools. Competition takes place on the last two Saturdays in January.
Volunteer roles we need:
- Attorney Coaches – at least two
- Practicing or retired Attorneys
- who can help coach students in case analysis, courtroom procedure, witness examination, and persuasive argumentation.
- Ideally, we build a three-coach team, with focused support for pre-trial, prosecution, and defense.
- Team Administrator (at least one)
- A parent volunteer to help keep the program organized.
- This includes paperwork, fundraising, public relations, coordinating snacks for meetings and competition days, and helping plan an end of year celebration.
- No legal background required.
If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact Head Coach Robyn Christo at sanmarinmocktrial@gmail.com. Robyn is happy to answer questions and share more about the commitment and the roles.

Edition #21 (2/1)
Principal’s Note:
High schools are complex places, and maybe more than ever, leadership requires holding multiple truths at once. We acknowledge where we still need to grow and do better, and we want to celebrate moments of excellence when they happen. Both matter. Both are true. I will also be honest that holding this tension is one of the most difficult parts of my job.
At San Marin, athletics are a meaningful part of our culture. More than 700 of our 1,230 students participate in a school sport. Sit with that for a moment. That is hundreds and hundreds of students finding connection and purpose through teammates, coaches, training and competition; through early mornings, late afternoons, shared goals, injuries, setbacks, healing and growth. While I sometimes hear criticism about our athletics, I also want to name how powerful it is that so many of our students experience the myriad of life lessons that come with being part of a team. This week, I am pausing to recognize and share a special moment in time, and an example of pure excellence.
San Marin’s wrestling program has a long and proud history. We won our first league championship in 1975 and followed that with 16 consecutive titles. In the mid 1990s, the program returned to championship form, winning five more league titles between 1995 and 1999. Wrestling, by its nature, demands resilience. Athletes step onto the mat knowing there will be losses, setbacks, and moments that test human resolve. Learning how to respond to failure, adjust, and come back stronger is wrestling!
That same culture of discipline, commitment, and growth is reflected today across the program, including a girls wrestling team that is the largest in MCAL–a point of pride for our school and a signal of who gets to belong and compete at San Marin.
After many strong seasons, the team captured an unexpected league tournament title in 2022, then won a tournament title again in 2025, after missing the regular season title that ended with a one-point loss to Tamalpais in the final meet.
This season, the team went undefeated and claimed the regular season championship. It is the first undefeated regular season title since 1998. A 28 year gap.
What stands out most is not just the result, but the work behind it. The consistency. The care for one another. The willingness to show up every day and push through hard practices, close matches, and pressure moments. Alumni and long time supporters have reached out to share their congratulations because they recognize what it takes to do this the right way.
Congratulations to our wrestlers and coaches on a remarkable season. I am grateful to Coach Cory Boyd, his staff, our families, and the wrestlers themselves for the work and commitment behind this success. You represent San Marin with pride and I hope you feel our admiration during this special moment in time.

Principal’s Note:
This Wednesday, several of our teachers and staff from San Marin will join colleagues from Sinaloa Middle School for our first World Savvy Leadership Cohort training. The timing matters.
We are leading in and through a moment that asks more of our schools. Our work at the middle and high school level goes beyond teaching just content; we must help students consider multiple perspectives, listen across differences, engage in hard conversations, and see themselves as meaningful contributors. The World Savvy Leadership Cohort gives us a framework to move deeper into this work.
Our ninth grade student experience has shown me a deep need to create shared language and shared expectations for what it means to be a learner, a leader, and a community member in high school. Wednesday’s Leadership Cohort will focus on building leadership skills through considering what education should look like in this moment and beyond, and partnering with Sinaloa Middle School will strengthen this effort.
I am grateful to the staff stepping into this work. We are very intentionally distributing leadership here at San Marin, so instructional expertise lives in teams, not just in the admin office. From my perspective, this will move decisions closer to our classrooms, and I believe, directly demonstrates how meaningful changes are actively underway.

Principal’s Note:
Today is a state and federal holiday, and we pause to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. King spoke often about the inherent worth of every person and each person’s right to live with dignity. At San Marin, we define human dignity as this. Every individual has the right to make the most of their life, every single day.
Like any organization, we have work to do. Our vision, and our willingness to have honest and sometimes difficult conversations, reflect that commitment. You see it in our classrooms as we shift toward deeper student engagement. You see it in our building new collaborative leadership groups and our focus on strong relationships. You see it in how we are working to better welcome and support our students and families.
You too have the right to make the most of your life, every day. I hope you carry this message through the rest of the day, tomorrow and beyond.

Principal’s Note:
On Wednesday evening at 6:00 PM, we will host a joint ELAC and PTSA meeting. I hope you will join us!
At the meeting, I will share a high-level overview of our School Plan for Student Achievement, often called the SPSA. We will not review the plan in detail. I will highlight our focus areas and a few of the programs supporting this work. The SPSA is our annual plan that names our priorities and the actions we are taking.
This year, our plan is grounded in three NUSD priorities: academic achievement, student well-being, and family engagement. At San Marin, these priorities are coming together through our focus on student engagement in daily classroom learning, building adult and student relationships rooted in dignity and restorative practices, and authentic partnership with families.
This meeting is not just about sharing information. Your perspective and questions help shape the school we are building together. I hope you will join us Wednesday at 6:00 PM in the library.

Principal’s Note:
Welcome back, San Marin. I’m smiling as I type 2026 is the Year of the Horse!
The Year of the Horse comes from the Chinese zodiac; each year is represented by an animal that reflects certain qualities and patterns of energy. The Horse represents strength, endurance, and forward motion. Not flashy. Not loud. It represents strength, endurance, and in my mind, a steady, humble path forward. That feels about right for where we are as a school.
I appreciate the steadiness that is here at San Marin, where we are building relationships where we slow down, listen, and repair and operate in the collective effort to build a school grounded in our shared human dignity.
I’m looking forward to whatever comes next, and hoping you are able to find progress, independence and push beyond familiar limits as we move into 2026: the Year of the Horse!

Youth E-Bike Safety Advisory: What Parents Should Know
Under California law, all e-bikes must have fully operable pedals, and the motor must not exceed 750 watts. Marin County has adopted additional safety regulations for Class 2 (throttle-assisted) e-bikes. Here’s a quick break down:
- Class 1: Pedal-assist, up to 20 mph. The ONLY e-bike legal for all ages in Marin County. Helmets are required for riders under 18 and strongly encouraged for everyone.
- Class 2: Throttle-powered, up to 20 mph. In Marin County, riders must be 16 or older, and helmets are required for all ages.
- Class 3: Pedal-assist, up to 28 mph. Riders must be 16 or older and helmets are required for all ages statewide. These e-bikes are not allowed on multi-use pathways in Marin County.
Individuals under 16 years old are prohibited from riding e-scooters. Riders aged 16 and older must possess a valid driver's license or permit and wear a helmet.

Edition #14 (11/30)
TIP: Rotate your phone to landscape for the best reading experience.
Principal’s Note:
From my perspective, December brings a natural pause in our school year. As we step into the final month of 2025, I want to recognize the momentum we’ve built working together.
This fall was full. Athletic success across multiple teams, strong performing arts in our musical and rock band shows, reorganizing robotics, the launch of our testing center, student leadership events, CTE, STEM, ELD program planning, and solid classroom learning all moved forward with real energy.
Inside classrooms, our Learning Walks launched in November and gave us a shared look at instruction. Cross-department cohorts visited classrooms, recorded non-evaluative observations, and brought that information back to the Instructional Leadership Team. This work will continue by sharing findings with the whole staff and visiting more classrooms in January!
The instructional strengths we saw included clear routines, purposeful tasks, and students using academic language to explain their thinking. The work is ongoing, and we will keep learning together and sharing progress as we go.
I am also grateful for the relationships forming across campus. I have said before that I am committed to building a school where adults can have hard conversations and improve how we spend time together. I am seeing new meeting structures, intentional greetings, restorative conversations, and movement toward a culture that is not just talked about, but lived.
As we step into December, we still have important work to do. The goal is simple: keep improving instruction through Learning Walks that help us study student engagement; stay grounded in honest conversation; repair relationships when harm or strain shows up. I feel clarity and purpose heading into January and look forward to keeping you informed along the way.
Announcements & Community Events:
Reminder: Tardy Policy
When the first bell rings, students are expected to be moving promptly toward their next class.
A student is considered on time when they have entered the classroom before the second bell.
Tardy Notifications: Parents/guardians will be notified via automated robocall if their student is marked late to class. Parents/guardian’s who are not receiving these robocalls should contact your attendance tech Jacque Baniqued (A-L) or Michelle Guin (M-Z).
Monitoring & Consequences: Tardiness will be monitored by administration and campus supervisors. Students with excessive tardies 10 or more are getting assigned tardy lunchtime detention.
Being on time is an essential habit for academic success and future readiness—show respect for your teachers, your classmates, and your own learning by arriving on time.

On Friday night Mustang Football went toe-to-toe with Cardinal Newman in the NCS playoffs and the game went to double overtime. The game was unlike anything I’ve seen at the high school level. I’m proud of how our players, coaches and our fans showed up! The San Marin community filled the stands and I want to especially congratulate our seniors on a strong season and a memorable finish.

On Sunday I was able to see the final showing of White Christmas. The countless hours of work behind this production was obvious. Congratulations to the cast, crew, parent volunteers, teachers, tech teams and everyone who made it possible!

Principal’s Note:
This week, I am pleased to highlight more ways our staff and students are working together to build a more connected, inclusive, and welcoming San Marin community. This year, we just recently launched the English Language Development (ELD) Alliance program. This is a student-designed effort that brings energy, connection, and belonging to our ELD community.
Students are organized into “houses,” each centered on a characteristic they value and identify with. Once a month, during our first Access period, these Alliances come together for friendly competitions, teamwork challenges, and shared celebrations. Throughout the year, teams earn points for participation, collaboration, and community spirit.
The goal is simple: to help students feel connected, have space to be themselves, and build relationships grounded in support and allyship, both in ELD and across campus.
Check out the Alliance banners designed by students!

Edition #11 (11/2)
Principal’s Note:
This week, I am pleased to highlight the ways our staff and students are working together to build a more connected, inclusive, and welcoming San Marin community.
On Thursday, our staff took part in an “Upstander” professional development training led by an inspiring team of student and adult facilitators. The session gave us a chance to reflect on how each of us contributes to a school culture where racial slurs can be normalized or not tolerated in any context.
An Upstander is someone who recognizes when something said is wrong and chooses to act. Instead of staying silent or pretending like they did not hear it, an Upstander speaks up and takes steps to address the situation.
Our goal is to increase our awareness and develop skills so when a racial slur occurs, our staff is able to call people in, not out. We want to be able to explore impact, educate students, and repair harm when it occurs.
The photos from the day show what this learning looked like in action. Building a community grounded in respect and empathy will take all of us and I look forward to sharing our progress along the way.

Edition #10 (10/26)
Principal’s Note:
On Saturday afternoon I caught the final performance of San Marin’s “Check Please” by Jonathan Rand. I’m proud of Mr. Brad Smith’s steady leadership of our drama program, and our student actors brought real courage and craft to the stage. It was a sensational show and a reminder of the talent and heart in our Performing Arts community. Thank you to our actors, Mr. Smith, our parent and caregiver supporters, and the stage and tech crews who made it unforgettable.
Thank you to everyone who came out for our STEM fundraiser Saturday night. It was a sold-out, Oktoberfest-themed, celebration and a great evening at Indian Valley Golf Course.
A few core ideas I shared with attendees: STEM is the new literacy. In 2025, making sense of data, writing simple code, designing solutions, solving complex problems, and creatively sharing what we learn are becoming basic skills. These tools help students thrive in community college, university, the trades, the military, and in careers that are increasingly shaped by technology.
Our three STEM pathways are not narrow tracks. They prioritize and develop people skills like character, communication, cultural competence, collaboration, and critical thinking, all of which travel into engineering, business, entrepreneurship, healthcare, policy, the arts, and more. Skills like systems thinking, iteration, and data analysis show up everywhere. For example, business was the second most popular major among last year’s STEM grads!
Equity remains essential; every student deserves access and real support. All students are starting from different places, and some students need different support in order to reach the same end goals. This is a growth area for San Marin High School and this commitment matters to me, to our NUSD Board, to our Superintendent, and to our STEM faculty.
As I’ve written about before, I am a member of a Superintendent Dr. Smith-led committee studying our STEM programs and processes with the goal of widening access and improving outcomes for all. This is another priority of mine that I look forward to sharing our progress with you.
Announcements & Community Events:

Edition #9 (10/19)
Principal’s Note:
During the AM session of last Monday’s professional development day, our staff welcomed Jeff McCormick from the Center for Educational Leadership (CEL). This week, as promised, I wanted to share where we are in that process.
If you missed an earlier update, San Marin’s work with CEL this year centers on “Learning Walks”, a non-evaluative way for teachers to visit classrooms together and learn from one another with the goal of increasing student engagement and efficacy across campus. I spoke about this in my September 29 NUSD board presentation: Disengaged Teens & San Marin MTSS
I believe that if we want to raise student engagement, we must be willing to change what adults do, how we think about teaching and learning, and how we relate to students; this means we must be willing to rethink how we spend our time. I am convinced this is the path to making the learning experience better. So, where are we in this shift in our practice?
Current steps: departments are meeting and defining “look-fors” anchored in the core of instructional best practices:
- What the teacher is saying and doing in the classroom
- What students are saying and doing in the classroom
When we begin to visit classrooms, the evidence we collect will be descriptive and specific, yet not opinionated. This will be challenging, important, informative work because it will require us to “learn to see” and “unlearn to judge.” Unlike traditional evaluations, the CEL process is dependent on tracing cause and effect. For example, when a light goes on for a student, what was the observed, intentional strategy the teacher used?
I am excited to share this work with you; it represents a shift in how we are spending our time and demonstrates that collectively we are building new skills for observation and analysis.
Next steps: ILT members will finalize department look-fors, set up Learning Walk cohorts, visit classrooms, and bring what they have observed back to the whole staff. I look forward to sharing what we see in classrooms and keep you informed along the way.

Edition #7 (10/5)
Principal’s Note:
Our community wants to hear more about our instructional programs, so this week I’m sharing some positive news from our STEM program. Science AP exam pass rates from last year were published late summer, July 2025. Pass rates, meaning the percentage of students scoring 3, 4, or 5 (scores that qualify for college credit or placement at most universities), were:
AP Biology: San Marin 76% (CA 64.7%, worldwide 64.2%)
AP Chemistry: San Marin 83% (CA 56.6%, worldwide 55.9%)
AP Environmental Science: San Marin 93.3% (CA 70.6%, worldwide 69.2%)
AP Physics: San Marin 86% (CA 66.2%, worldwide 66.6%)
Each one of these scores exceeded both state and worldwide averages in courses that are traditionally among the toughest. What makes this even more impressive is that our STEM program has never had more students take AP science classes than last year, nor have we ever had as many students pass science AP tests, and we have never had higher passing percentages. Long story short: more students + stronger results = the best outcomes San Marin has ever seen.
Congratulations to our STEM Coordinator, Katie Stafford and our STEM faculty including Peter Berkout, Tim Blok, Gilly Boyd, Jennifer Carlomango, Sarah Femmel, Melissa Havel, Nicole Katsulis, Amy Thwaite, Claudio Tronconi, Virginia Vogl and Nick Williams. Special thanks to STEM Marin Fund President, Christy Brown, Vice President, Erin Nickerson and the rest of our Fund trustees.
Sharing this data is really exciting when you consider the value of a STEM education in today’s world; STEM programs like ours (including the Arts!) give students a chance to discover, often for the first time, interests and talents they did not know they had. Teachers share that many of our students walk into STEM classes unsure, but they walk out with confidence, curiosity, and a sense of possibility.
Alongside two original STEM pathways, Engineering & Biotech, our third pathway, Art and Science, opens yet another door by connecting creativity and scientific thinking. Here, the idea is that access for students who may learn best through design, storytelling, and visual expression have an avenue to do just that. Special thanks to our Visual Arts team including Liz Lloyd, Cynthia Imhoff Bruininks and Jenny Norman.
For me, it’s clear why more and more families are encouraging their children to pursue STEM opportunities. Computer science and engineering are often two of the most prestigious majors at universities and STEM programs are among the most competitive and this is for good reason: they lead to some of the most respected and highest paying careers.
With the rise of artificial intelligence and robotics, the importance of STEM is only growing. I recently shared with a group of visiting 8th grade families that I imagine a future where robotics and AI become part of our STEM program. Our challenge will be finding and keeping great teachers and building the space to support this growth, as we have already outgrown our STEM building here on campus. To fully realize the potential of San Marin’s STEM program, we will need to partner with College of Marin and other community college and university partners. From my perspective, this will be an exciting part of growing our physical spaces, building relationships with our partner educators, and ultimately creating more opportunities for students and families.

Edition #6 (9/28)
Principal’s Note:
Last week, I shared how our Instructional Leadership Team will be facilitating Learning Walks as we put forward our goal of improving student engagement into action. One of the big questions we’ll be asking is simple - who is doing the talking?
Think back to your high school experience where most of the talk came from the teacher, a more traditional lecture style. For some learners that works just fine, yet for many it's quite challenging; the teacher asks questions, students answer, and the exchange is fast, free, and relatively unstructured. While for some, this style of instruction is immediately rewarding and validating, there are also limitations for a variety of learners.
In other classrooms, students are asking their own questions and talking with one another and the teacher-student dynamic is shifted. At first it might feel a little messy, and sometimes in these moments, the teacher almost fades into the background. Yet here, the students carry, and are responsible for, the discussion. Sometimes, they will even challenge each other to explain their view or share evidence, allowing them to reach an understanding together.
When classrooms become a place with less teacher talk and more student talk it can be a powerful sign of learning. It shows us that the students feel safe to take risks and are more intrinsically responsible for the work. As our Learning Walks get underway this October, we’ll be looking–and celebrating–these moments. As a staff, we genuinely cannot wait to share what we see. We will celebrate and learn from one another and share that with you, a cycle that will grow learning and transparency with the larger community.

Edition #5 (9/21)
Principal’s Note:
As the Principal of San Marin, my hope is that we can all continue to grow in our curiosity and be comfortable being a little less certain.
Humility begins with leadership, and for me that has meant asking for help. This year, we have a Principal’s Cabinet, a small group that meets weekly to look at our goals and help guide the work of our new Instructional Leadership Team. This team consists of 12 members, and this year, we are curious about improving student engagement because we know that when students are engaged, they learn.
To take on this work, our ILT will be visiting classrooms in small teams. The goal is to see what teachers and students are doing, celebrate great teaching, and also notice when students are not yet connected to the lesson. Opening up classrooms to colleagues takes both courage and humility, and I am grateful for the spirit our staff are bringing to this shared experience. In the weeks ahead, I will share more about our Learning Walks and what we are looking for (and celebrating!) in San Marin’s classrooms.

Edition #4 (9/14)
Principal’s Note:
We all believe that we see the world as it is, but really, we see it through our own lived experiences. Perspective is relative.
Princeton psychologist, Emily Pronin, along with Lee Ross and Andrew Ward, developed the concept of naïve realism. It’s the belief that our own views are clear and unbiased, while other people’s views are shaped by personal bias or outside influences. In other words, we usually figure everyone else is biased or a little off, while we are the ones who see things clearly.
According to Dr. Pronin, all of us evaluate others and the things other people do on a daily basis. While our eyes can physically see other people’s behaviors, those same eyes cannot literally look inward and observe our own behavior.
If I had one wish for the world right now, it would be for more humility; none of us see the world as it is. What it looks like to me isn’t what it looks like to you. If we could hold on to that, maybe we’d slow down, listen better, and understand a little more of each other. Next week I will share a little more about how we are working with these ideas at San Marin.

Edition #3 (9/7)
Principal’s Note:
A fundamental human principle and one of our strongest protective factors is connection. When we feel connected, great things are possible. But connection is more than just wearing the jersey or being a part of a teaching team or a member of the PTSA. We are at our best when we are a part of a larger group and we feel valued. Together, we have the opportunity to name and lessen the barriers that keep students, staff, and community members from truly connecting. I believe that is at the heart of a principal’s work
We invite you to bring your lived experience and ideas to PTSA. Bring them to ELAC, or to our Athletic, Visual and Performing Arts, and STEM booster programs. We encourage you to get involved at San Marin High School. Maybe our school becomes a place that feels like yours. That is what I'm working toward.
Reminders:
Tip for the best mobile viewing experience: Rotate your phone to landscape view & thumb your way through concise content!
Campus Events:
Learning Lounge:
Learning Lounge will start on Tuesday September 16th and will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7th period until 5pm.
